This Evo X-Engined Mirage Signals Mitsubishi Return To The WRC
If you've been holding out for a new Evo making a return to WRC, you'll be disappointed, but this Mirage R5 might be the next best thing
Mitsubishi has been out of the World Rally Championship for a few years now, with memories of the Lancer Evolution dominating the dirt, snow and tarmac of the world’s rally stages fading.
But the Japanese manufacturer is making a return to WRC with this: the Mirage R5. Built by Ralliart Sweden, it’s based on Mitsubishi’s small city car. It gets a 276bhp 1.6-litre version of the 2.0-litre unit featured in the Evo X, mated to a Garrett turbocharger. The R5 has a five-speed Sadev transmission, four-wheel drive and MacPherson suspension all round.
When the Mirage R5 starts competing, it’ll be up against the Ford Fiesta, Citroen DS3 and Peugeot 208 T16 R5 in WRC2.
