This F1 Car Hit The Barrier So Hard, The Steering Wheel Came Off

Marcus Ericsson went over the slippery Stowe exit kerb during F1 practice for the British GP at Silverstone and spun into the wall at incredibly high speed, hitting the barrier with enough force to throw the steering wheel off!

Ericsson managed to climb out of the car on his own and appears to be unharmed, although he has been transported to hospital for routine check-ups. But his car is far from OK and it looks likely that he will have to skip F1 qualifying.

Update:

So it seems Ericsson’s knee hit the steering wheel release, which caused it to come off. But still, a pretty nasty shunt and we’ve not really seen the steering wheel come off before! An unusual incident, but the main thing is Ericsson is OK.
