The FIA World Endurance Championship Has Ditched Grid Girls

We are used to seeing scantily-clad women standing in front of cars on motorsport grids, holding up number boards for each driver. However, the FIA World Endurance Championship is breaking tradition and has got rid of grid girls.

The move has split opinion. Some believe they bring a touch of glamour to proceedings, while others feel it is outdated, sexist and adds to the unwanted stereotype that motor racing is a sport for men only.

FIA WEC chief executive Gerard Neveu told Reuters on Thursday:

“From Silverstone next week, you will see that for any race we will do — no grid girls like in the past. For me that is the past. The condition of women is a little bit different now”

The endurance series then posted the following statement on Twitter:
