Ford And Mahindra Team Up To Develop SUVs and Electric Vehicles
After months of planning for a strategic alliance, Ford Motor Company and India-based automaker Mahindra and Mahindra have signed an agreement to develop compact-to-midsize SUVs and EVs.
Although the fine details have yet to be announced, the first SUV will be a midsize model developed from a Mahindra platform and sold by both Ford and Mahindra. Future models include a compact SUV and an electric vehicle, although specific details remain vague. The partnership is slated to last for “at least three years.”
Although the first models are likely destined for the Indian market, the partnership could see Mahindra powertrains and chassis platforms appear in Ford’s global product portfolio for the next several years.
“Both teams are working together on joint development areas in keeping with industry requirements and leveraging multiple strengths,” said Dr. Pawan Goenka, managing director of Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd., in a media release.
Mahindra and Mahindra have recently committed to the American market by investing in its existing production and design facility in Detroit. Their first vehicle for the US market is the tiny Roxor, an off-road vehicle inspired by the legendary Willys Jeep. Although it’s not street legal, the low price tag of $15,000 USD makes it a budget-conscious option for hardcore off-roaders.
