Ford Is Bringing Back The Mach 1 Name For An Electric SUV
The Detroit Auto Show has been a bit of a nostalgia-tinged affair for Ford, hasn’t it? As if revealing the new Mustang Bullitt (not to mention getting Steve McQueen’s granddaughter involved) wasn’t enough, the car maker has also announced that the Mach 1 name is to return.
Appearing on various Mustangs from 1969 to 1978 before returning briefly for the fourth-generation car, this nameplate is a legendary bit of Ford history. But if you’re thinking we’re about to see a limited-edition Mustang in a similar vein to the Bullitt, you ought to hold your horses. Or rather, err, ponies.
That’s because the Mach 1 name is actually (we’re hope you’re sitting down, Mustang purists) set to return for an electric performance SUV. Apparently though, the car will have Mustang-inspired styling.
Other than that, details are particularly thin on the ground. We do know that it’s part of Ford’s $11 billion-worth of investment for developing electric cars, and that it’ll be one of the early fruits of the huge - and recently doubled - EV cash injection, with a 2020 launch targeted.

They are going to get alot of hate, I dont mind electric SUV’s, but why Ford and Mitshubishi are feeling the need to put legendary names on them ruining the reputation those names have
This is a mistake…
a big BIG mistake…
No… NO!? They’re turning this muscle legend into an suv?! Faints
Not quite sure who these manufacturers are targeting with these SUVs and crossovers. Anyone who can get the reference hates that their beloved sports car’s name is now tacked onto some boring lifted hatchback, and anyone who doesn’t get the reference doesn’t care that their SUV is named after some old car. The only rational explanation for this is that they have actually run out of names for cars and are being forced to recycle them.
Give it to ford, they reveal possibly the greatest modern mustang and simultaneously destroy the namesake of a classic legend.
No, lets not do that
… This is a joke right?
“Mustang-inspired styling”
Pls don’t mess this up
That’s probably why Ford made the Bullitt. It’s to distract us from this… thing.
What’s next honestly?
Perhaps a Fiat 500 SUV?
Oh wait..
