Ford’s Mustang Shelby GT500 Has 700bhp+ And Glorious Noise
The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 has just been unleashed at the Detroit Motor Show, and God almighty – it sounds incredible.
A supercharged cross-plane V8 sits beneath a package tweaked solely for speed. That means an all-new dual-clutch gearbox (no manual option) with the ability to swap cogs in less than a tenth of a second, but never mind that: play the damn video again!
We don’t know exact performance figures, presumably because every time they try to measure it, everyone in the vicinity immediately starts making excuses to leave at a jog while awkwardly covering their crotches.
We do, however, know that it’ll do the standing quarter in less than 11 seconds and hit 60mph from rest in the mid-three-second bracket. Ford is calling it a ‘takedown artist’ in reference to the purpose for which it was built.
Special Michelin tyres will handle traction, the poor things, and they’re not the only things that are out of the ordinary. The GT500 has a carbonfibre driveshaft, MagneRide dampers and new aerodynamic bodywork designed to keep the car stable on track and at speed.
Your colour options span imaginatively-named shades like Red Hot, Twister Orange and, err, Grabber Lime. Presumably because it grabs your attention? Let’s hope so. Among the other options are a rear seat delete, a Carbon Fiber Track Pack with larger wheels and Pilot Sport 4S rubber, exposed carbonfibre everywhere and Recaro leather-and-suede chairs (pictured), and multiple stripe options in either paint or vinyl.
When you’re not hunting rival muscle cars (surely we can’t call this a pony?), sit back and enjoy what’s effectively just a pleasant, modern Ford with the likes of a 4G hotspot, a rear-view camera and a 12-inch SYNC3 interface. Now play that video again.

OH. MY. GOD…. 😍
Waiting for the Mid-engine corvette to just destroy every single american car with over 700 HP on the market right now
The mclaren 570s already does that…
Where’s the manual? #SaveTheManuals
This is why I love living in America and Michigan in general…
Can’t wait to see it go up against the ZL1 1LE… I’m voting for the GT500
Do you honestly think a Manual, would handle that torque?
Instead of manuals
We need to save Logic
A Tremec TR6060 going all the way back to 2007 is rated for 600 lb-ft and handled 662 lb-ft in the previous GT500. The TR6060 was also the sole option for the 700+HP Super Snakes with the only serious problem being a weak 2nd gear synchro. If Ford wanted to offer a manual in the S550 GT500 they very well could have.
Also, the Tremec TR6070 7-speed manual can be found in all C7 Corvettes, from the base model (450 lb-ft) to the ZR1 (715 lb-ft)
Are you joking or have you just never been to a drag strip? Lmao
Yes. Supersnakes make >850hp (depends on which one) with a stick, and I even know a guy with a ‘16 GT350 which is procharged + spray, and makes 918 whp w/o spray on the stock Tremec 3160 and hasn’t had an issue. His insta is @vuuduu350 btw
Holy Christ
It has a flat plane crank V8 by the way. The 5,2 is the Voodoo engine, same as the GT350(R), only here it is supercharged :)
Cross plane, not a flat plane. It is 5.2L based on the Voodoo but with different crank, stronger head bolts, revised springs, valves, cooling channels, etc. Much different than Voodoo engine.
They have not yet released an engine code or a name. My guess is that it would be a different name. With a cross plane crank, it may also not rev as high. But it will have the scream of a 2.7L Eaton sourced supercharger (same one found on the new Corvette ZR1). Nice!
Im not a fan of that grill tho.
It sounds like the original bulitt mustang
