GTA 6 To Be Smaller Than 5 On Release, Expanded Later

As Rockstar aims to steer itself away from the game industry's infamous 'crunch' culture, it's emerged that GTA 6 - currently in development - will be a smaller release initially
GTA 6 To Be Smaller Than 5 On Release, Expanded Later

It’s coming up seven years since GTA 5 came out. The game was a smash hit, grossing a billion dollars a matter of days after its release, going on to become the most profitable entertainment product in history. Demand for the next instalment, then, is high.

The good news is it’s in the works right now. The bad news is it won’t be ready for a while. In an extensive report (which we strongly recommend you read) into a culture shift within Rockstar Games, Kotaku mentioned that the next Grand Theft Auto game is “early in development”. The report’s author, Jason Schreier, noted on Twitter that GTA 6 is “a ways away”.

Tez2, a well-known leaker of Rockstar insider knowledge, has since claimed development is around half-way through. But wherever it’s at right now, we can be fairly certain there’ll be a good wait for the game.

Also, it’ll be smaller than GTA 5 on release, and for good reason. GTA 6 be “moderately sized” to begin with, which judging by 5 and Rockstar’s other bewilderingly expansive titles, will still mean a sizeable game. From there, it’ll be expanded via updates, a method intended by Rockstar’s senior management to protect employees from the ‘crunch’.

Excessive overtime is a huge problem for the gaming industry and an issue in which Rockstar has been fully complicit. In 2018 company co-founder Dan Houser - who departed the firm last month - infamously said members Red Dead Redemption 2 team were putting in 100-hour weeks to get the game finished.

The company’s attitude is said to have already shifted noticeably in the 18 months that followed, and in an email to staff picked up by Kotaku, Rockstar’s head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe outlined numerous changes in store for the company in 2020. These included measures to reduce overtime, management training and flexible working practices.

So, when you finally fire up Grand Theft Auto 6 and notice that the map isn’t quite as big as last time (but still no doubt giant) or there’s something else you were expecting to see that’s missing, remember it’s all for the greater good within the games industry.

I just hope the Online side of it wont become a bug ridden mess and that the Devs dont take a shotgun attitude towards modders doing OFFLINE stuff only

Remember the fiasco with a modding community being targeted by the parent company of Rockstar North?, yeah I do, lets not have that again please!

Crunch should die. It’s a habit that’s killing workers, literally

Am i the only one that is not excited at all?
imo Gta 5 was a “let’s just throw money at it and hope for the best” kind of game. It was pretty and all but it felt boring to me.
And then gta online made me lose all respect for the game and the franchise. It was a bad, soulless and toxic grind that i put countless hours into(which i deeply regret now).
No doubt gta 6 will look amazing but I’m worried that it will feel like GTA 5 to me.

I think the reason you look at it this way is because you got tired of it. And that’s how you still remember it.

Would be better if the map was bigger, but the content was less(clothing, cars, bikes, planes).

Perhaps that’s how they’ll end up doing. With the map thing we’re just speculating, but it would be a good way to do it (remember how in GTA IV you had to gradually unlock each island?)

Jole.

We’ve got really bad internet in SA. I know certain parts of the world have good internet speeds and such, so downloading updates won’t really be an issue for them. But yeah I dunno about this whole small-launch-with-frequent-updates thing…

And with the current state of game file sizes, downloading 20-30GB every other month (I’m just gonna assume that’s how it’ll go) can be a pain for a lot of people.

Tbh I’m perfectly fine with waiting a very long time for the next game, if it means I get a complete game at launch. I know a lot of people don’t and/or won’t see eye-to-eye with what I’m saying lol.

These so-called articles are pointless speculation with no more credibility than astrology: put enough ideas out there and some of them will be close. Lets just wait until Rockstar makes their own statement

Yeah, no. All I hear is they will be selling a smaller game to people for the usual price of $60 and you will get to pay for extra content. It’s called a price increase. You get less for more. Less game means they make more money.

If they get rid of over time that means people will have less chances to make more money. At least that’s how it works in the real blue collar world. You work more than 40 hours a weak you get paid more. Other jobs have crunch time. Periods of time where people are expected to work longer. Some times it’s optional. It gives employees a chance to more money by working longer and harder. I know, that’s evil. This whole crunch time bad thing is really stupid.

Anyway I am done with Rockstar and their games. What they did with GTA 5 and that horrible online multiplayer mode was terrible. We never got any single player DLC content. I liked GTA 5’s single player enough that I would have bought it. I hated the GTAO part of the game.

Then I got into RDR1 and played RDR2 last year. I really liked the gam, more than GTA 5. I was super hyped for the PC release. But that PC port is just total trash. Even now it’s still a mess 5 months later.

I am done. I won’t be buying another Rockstar game. If I do it won’t be for full price. I will wait till I can get for $20 on Steam. I preordered the RDR2 PC port. That was my first preorder for a Rockstar game and it will be my last.

I honestly don’t even care about GTA 6. After what they did with GTA 5 and that horrible RDR2 PC port I have no faith or confidence in Rockstar. They can take their terrible online multiplayer modes and garbage tier PC ports and f**k off.

GTA 6 will be small to start off, but overtime will be expanded/updated through DLC Releases. possibly to include new area’s and new cities.

I hope they don’t mean expanded via paid updates, as that would be a proper slap in the face.
