Hello CT. My name is Richard Porter and I was the script editor on Top Gear. Ask me anything.

After working on the show for 13 years, 22 series and 175 programmes, there’s quite a lot I can tell you about Top Gear. I know whose idea it was to get a dog, I was there when we got threatened by drug barons in Bolivia, I can give you the real story of that Porsche number plate.

I’ve put all these things in my new book, but you can ask me about them anyway. Or something else. Up to you. I’m here all night. Try the soup in a basket.

All those moments when the trio crashed their cars! Like when Hammond crashed the F-Type in the perfect road trip video or when Hammond crashed the 458 who paid for the damages or were they let off without any payments?

Don’t forget the Porsche that Hammond stuffed at VIR. Man, he’s is really good at crashing…

Has there ever been a car that the show has either modified or destroyed where you wished they just… hadn’t?

I liked the BL cars. James’s Princess and Hammond’s Dolomite were surprisingly nice to drive. But there are plenty around so I didn’t feel too guilty, and the cars still exist.

Was it part of the script for Jeremy to get mad and punch a producer?

Whats the most fun you’ve had on Set? I’ve read the book, don’t say the bus. Especially that Unfunny one.

Also, please do write for the 3’s new show.

Hard to say. Too much fun. The most recent fun I remember was the Peugeots film. You might have seen that bit in the book. I was drunk. What I didn’t mention is that later we went to the pub and then to the hotel bar. It was great.

I only have one quick question, do the guy’s modify the cheap car’s themselves? Or is it done by mechanics

Bit of both. They have to be safe to drive on the road so a mechanic has to supervise. And some times there was a time issue so we needed help. Also, if we left Jeremy alone he’d still be trying to make a limo to this day.
