Hello Monza; You're The Most Exciting Vauxhall We've Seen In Years

The Monza concept features a cheeky new engine, styling inspired by a dog and amazing interior tech

Stop the internet: it’s an exciting Vauxhall! Look past the dubious rear-end styling - apparently inspired by a running greyhound - and underneath you’ll find some very hot new tech.

This is the Monza Concept, which will be one of parent company Opel's highlights at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. This one uses a new version of the plug-in hybrid system used by the Ampera and Chevrolet Volt, but with a cheeky compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo instead of the ridiculously puny 1.4. Vauxhall says the modular chassis design can take any kind of drivetrain.

But that’s all boring compared to the interior gadgets. There is no instrument cluster, and there’s no central display screen either. What you get is a wide, curving dashboard that acts as a projection surface for 18 LED projectors that can display any number of data readouts – in three glorious dimensions.

The idea is that drivers and passengers can choose whatever displays they want, which then can be deactivated to minimise distractions. There’s some next-level smartphone integration, too, with settings for ignoring all contact, allowing social media connections for passengers and for opening up the entire web.

It all sounds properly amazeballs, but naturally the interior displays are the only bits Vauxhall hasn’t revealed any proper pictures of – yet. There's only this blown-up section of another photo, but we'll delve deeper at Frankfurt.

Elsewhere there are no B-pillars and epic full-length gullwing doors serving all four seats. From the front it looks like a blatant re-sketch of the Mercedes SLS AMG, but like them or not the doors don’t look like they'd be so hot when it comes to parking on multi-storey car parks. Don't expect them to make production.

What do you reckon? Hot or not?
