Everyone’s making SUVs these days, as they’re massive money spinners in the luxury car segment. Maserati is the latest manufacturer to jump on the bandwagon with the Levante, which is set to make its debut at the Geneva motor show next month. Yesterday we were treated to a leak of some low-res, watermarked images courtesy of AutoWeek, and Maserati has reacted by publishing the first official images.

Technical details are still officially thin on the ground, but the Italian manufacturer claims the Levante’s chassis has been designed to offer the kind of on-road performance synonymous with the brand, while also being “excellent” at going off road. The SUV will also come as standard with “sophisticated electronic suspension with controlled damping and air springs…intelligent all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic transmission specially calibrated for the brand’s new SUV.”

As part of the leak, however, engine details were revealed. There are two petrol models available, both utilising a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6, while a diesel model is also available, also with a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6.

The Levante makes excellent business sense for Maserati. Every luxury car manufacturer, even those renowned for making performance cars, needs an SUV in its lineup if it wants to make money. And while it might seem like sacrilege sticking an enthusiast-oriented badge on a big ol’ barge, remember that the money made from this will contribute to even more glorious performance cars in the future…

I’m not too crazy on the looks. It’s like a Lexus RX350 profile from the side and a Porsche Cayennish look that the back. But that’s just my opinion.

Though i’m not even slightly interested in a maserati SUV, much like when POorsche brought out their SUV - if it leads to increased R&D spending on their ‘core products’ I’m all for it. Come on every footballers wife and middle aged business man with a pretense of adventure - buy it. buy it now.

Give maserati some more money to make the cars we actually care about without having to worry too much about their profit margin.

everybody cares for the styling… this is an suv so there is only one thing that i care about… its 4wd system… maserati has access to the best by far in the market 4wd system, Jeep’s Quadra-Drive II. If they put this in then it will rocket to the top of my favourite suvs… if they decide to use any of these useless awd systems then its in the junkbox with all the other useless suvs. If i want a fast car with rear doors then i am sorry but i am going to buy an rs6 instead.

Sorry, but why is it so important for an SUV to have a good AWD? 99% of the sold cars aren’t even going to see gravel. If you want to offroad or drive muddy ways you better pick an old Land Rover or smth. similar.
