Here's How You Jump Start A Car Using Nothing But A Jack And Some Rope

Stuck somewhere without jump leads and have a flat battery? Here's an unconventional solution...

This method is something we’ve seen before, and what’s happening is fairly straight forward - the guy here is essentially simulating a ‘bump start’ with a stationary car. Just like in a bump start, the movement of the driven wheel turns the engine over, creating enough compression for it to fire.

There are a few things to bear in mind, though. It’ll only work with a manual gearbox, and if you’re only jacking up one side, you’re going to want a car with an open differential. It’s also - for various and hopefully obvious reasons - not that safe, so you’re probably better off just waiting for recovery. Unless you’re stuck in some Bear Grylls in the desert drinking his own urine kind of situation.

Maybe he has those because he doesn’t want his wheels stolen, just in case. Let the man be…

Not like you had a Ferrari either, so don’t go denigrating people. And if you did have a Ferrari, it’d still be wrong.

Maybe he lost a lug and just grabbed a pack of cheap lugs off the shelf. I had to buy skinnier lugs for the new wheels I bought for my Eclipse because the factory ones were too fat for the lug holes; I didn’t intend to buy locking lugs because they annoy me, but a pack of 16 regular nuts with four locking ones was cheaper than 20 standard lugs individually.

You know you shouldn’t drive on LSD!
jokes aside, if you have car with LSD you probably won’t have battery issues (your car is your love and you take care of it and don’t have old not working battery in it)

I think if I did that in mine the jack wouldn’t secure the car because the older TDI engines when they start the whole car shakes

You can not. Firstly you need to attach it to rear wheel, which you can not steer in order to get a good grip on the rope. Secondly the LSD will not allow you to spin the engine when the other wheel is on the ground. Third, you can not use the handbrake to hold the car because that would keep the driven wheels from spinning and prevent you starting the car completely.

Sure you can! Find a tree branch or something to chock the front wheels, lift the car from the diff & use reverse instead of first (so you can pull the rope from behind the car).

more like those who have lsd, you actually want an open so it sends the power to the weel with no traction, otherwise the ather wheel thats touching the ground is gonna spin and the car is gonna take off
