Here's A Massively In-Depth Look At The Tesla Model 3's Good And Bad Bits

Doug DeMuro provides one of his most thorough inspections yet, as he casts an analytical eye over Tesla's 3-series rival

We know by now that we can rely on Doug DeMuro to obsessively pick apart all the features and quirks of a car, but this latest video takes that ethos to a whole new level. With a 32 minute run time. But, it’s worth sticking with this one, as there is surely no other Tesla Model 3 video out there that goes into quite so much detail.

After watching through, we’re still a little unsure about the Model 3. The lack of speedo directly in front of the driver seems a real hindrance, and stuffing almost everything in terms of controls into that massive central screen looks to take minimalism too far. It also - like other Teslas - doesn’t look particularly well built. The interior looks cheap in places, and that door alignment is borderline upsetting.

Still, there’s plenty to like, with a ridiculous amount of storage and luggage space, a huge range and good straight-line performance. It sounds like it’s generally very good to drive, too. We can’t wait to get our hands on one.

It had potential…but the interior ruins EVERYTHING

In my opinion the “simple design” is super counter intuitive. For example going into a menu screen to turb on your lights is just silly.

The lights are automatically operated by sensors, that’s why they have “hidden” the controls, you won’t be needing them

Designers: “it looks like a Russian gulag inside. How can we fix this?”

There does, however, come a point when technology for its own sake is less usable than not… I also am not a fan of the interior design. That would get SO boring after about two weeks behind the wheel. Sitting in an Audi Q3 would feel like a sensory overload, and it’s an Audi for heaven’s sake.

Am I the only one who is appaled by the lack of physical ac controls, that huge lcd screen and the lack of a hud? How is it safe to have such a screen in the middle of the car with no speedo in the front. One more mind boggling thing is, for something as efficient as an EV, how the hell is it efficient to have an always on display instead of a couple of buttons

yes and the light of the display definitely does not help night visibility. I am happy my car is very dark inside when i want it to be. Dim orange speed gauges very dim radio light.. nothing to blind me and my eyes when they adjusted to the dark roads.. this is pretty dumb tbh. If i could just change my old e39 to be an EV id prefer it by large over the model 3. the only great thing that id miss compared to it is preheating my car in the winter before getting in.

I hate that interior more than any other interior. I’d rather have a Prius than a Dodge Charger with that interior.

This would be me test driving the car.
Me: “How do I adjust the mirrors?”
Salesman: “Just open this menu and press this option.”
Me: “Turn on the lights”
Salesman: “Just open this menu and press this option.”
Me: “Adjust the radio.”
Salesman: “Just open this menu and press this option.
Me: “Adjust the air vent”
Salesman: “Just open this menu and press this option.”
Me: “Is there anything I can do without looking at that stupid screen?”
Salesman: “Well, you can turn on the hazards using this button…”
