Bike enthusiasts of a certain age will go weak at the knees at the mere mention of two-stroke, 250cc sports bikes. The heyday for these light, noisy and smoky beasts has long since passed, but there is hope in the form of this: the Vins Duecinquanta.

It sounds like a fictional vehicle from GTA V (Duecinquanta is Italian for two-fifty, if you’re curious), but it’s actually an exquisitely-made, modern two-stroke 250cc sports bike dreamed up by a bunch of ex-Ferrari Formula 1 engineers. And it’ll be outrageously quick.

The Competizione track version produces around 80bhp from a slightly larger 288cc V-twin, and thanks to the extensive use of carbonfibre in its construction, it weighs about 85kg. Nope, that’s not a typo.

The road-going version will be heavier, tipping the scales at just under 100kg. A power figure for that hasn’t been revealed yet, presumably because it hasn’t been homologated yet. It uses direct fuel injection in a bid to pass Euro4 emissions regulations.

If you’re thinking a low-volume motorbike with a carbonfibre frame, wheels and forks is going to be expensive, you’d be right. The Competizione is €50,000, while the road bike is €40,000. Ouch.

Why does it seem that just about every amazing abomination comes from former employees of known manufacturers? I’m not complaining though. Keep it coming.

Also, the “Vins Duecinquinta” is just a brilliant name. Cheers to that.

  1. Maybe they just know their stuff because they have experience (or people with no prior history just don’t get noticed)
  2. Holy crap the name is awesome

Maybe because when they are actually working in the companies they start having all those wacky and outrageous ideas but then when they showed it to the brand it was like “oH No CanT dO DiS Not pROfItAblE” so when they leave they just execute those ideas.

Because a lot of these people always had the talent and potential to do what their heart desired but had to acquire a little wealth, connections and a lot of experience in drudge work companies run by accountants (weighing profits against investment) before they can get going with their companies run by dreamers (which sadly have a high chance of going bankrupt in 3-5 years).

2-stroke engines generate high amounts of pollution. Not cool!

“Several Chinese cities have banned scooters and report markedly reduced air pollution, even when other traffic has increased. In a paper published in the journal Nature Communications, the authors said that in some cities scooters may contribute up to two thirds of the roadside air pollution. They said: “Using average two stroke scooter emission factors… suggests that two stroke scooters contribute to around 60 per cent of roadside POA in Bangkok, where they account for 10 per cent of fuel consumption” “

You’re talking about the combined effects of a lot of scooters, though. Can’t imagine they’re going to make many Duecinquantas!

Ok i got some concerns, beautiful bike, wonderfull config, 10/10 want but i fear something that light would be an absolute nightmare on spirited runs if you arent an absolute Moto GP GOD. I just want to know what kind of life insurance you think i should get before i put in an order………. And a place to get 50 large

Not really an issue, in fact it should be easier to ride so long as it has sufficient grip. It should still feel pretty planted because it has two wheels. That, and the rider can easily double the weight.
