Here's What Goes Into Building A 1000bhp A90 Toyota Supra Engine
2JZ-powered Toyota GR Supras are already here. But as much as we wouldn’t want to take anything away from the incredible work done on mad engine-swapped A90s from the likes of HKS and Fat Five Racing, we’d argue that the most interesting tuning project for the new car right now involves the stock engine.
As announced a few weeks back, Papadakis Racing - responsible for mad projects like Frederic Asbo’s drift Corolla - intends to take the BMW B58 unit that powers the Supra to 1000bhp. For the first time, we can see the engine being built from the block upwards.
The standard B58 block has been retained, although it’s now full of shiny new things. There are custom-forged JE pistons, which look especially lovely thanks to special coating - the gold stuff on the top is all about heat resistance, while the black parts on the sides reduce wear on the cylinder bores.
The new pistons are mated with Chromoly Carrillo con-rods, which are joined to the standard crankshaft. The cylinder head has been heavily worked over, now featuring new valves, springs and retainers. It’s been ported, too.
Our favourite touch? That’s a tough call - it comes down to either the 3D-printed aluminium intake manifold or the red rocker cover. The latter is clad in stuff called Cerakote, which can be used on plastic parts like this.
The reason for all these changes is simple: this B58 needs to hold up to a whole load of boost from a single, massive Borg Warner turbocharger. A dyno run is happening soon, so it won’t be long before we find out if Papadakis has met its four-figure horsepower goal.

Hmm, this could be interesting I hope Toyota are taking notes on this
Why would they need to know how to make a 1000hp B58?
Looking forward to seeing it in action
I’m thinking the B58 is the 2020 equivalent to the S52. And the S52 is a cult classic, fantastic engine with heaps of potential. Why do people hate on the B58 so much? Oh yeah it’s because ItS NoT A ToYoTa eNgInE
Yeah i mean yamaha still had the turbo inline 6 used on some volvo models
I think that the b58 is a much better choice and i Hope it will be as tunable and as legendary as the 2jz was
If it does get to 1000+ horsepower, I will be genuinely surprised at how quickly the B58 got to that figure.
N54’s made 700-800 on the stock block. I’m not surprised at all. These things are monsters waiting to be uncaged
Come on mate…Us real bavarians fanboys have known this fact straight from good old 2006..13y already since some guys has been pushing big figures on the N54 (700+ on completely stock as someone previously said). Then the S55 came and pushed things way beyond that… 1000hp is the “bare minimum” we could wait from this platform, and I’m talking WHP… B-) It may not push as big as the 1500-2000 crank hp of some 2JZ, but the 1200-1300 max it will put down will be less laggy, more efficient, with a better power curve and with way less weight involved.
I’m not the biggest fan of the car, but credit is definitely due. If they were able to hit 1,000 that fast with a stock block and crank, that says a lot about the potential these motors have.
what peaked my curiosity the most is simply how is it to weld 3d printed aluminium compared to cast aluminium for example?
got a80 fanboys like

no
Ouch it only needed every single piece changed
Well that’s what happens to a fully built 2JZ too
Little too complicated for me. 2JZ is just so much more simple. Dont like the internal exhaust manifold thingy… and the camshaft set up is space age compared to the 2J. I’m sure it’s a solid engine but too many bells and whistles. Worrisome.
