Honda Just Gifted Australian Police A Honda Civic Type R

The New South Wales Police force in southeastern Australian have just been gifted a Civic Type R by the good guys at Honda. Despite the car’s +300hp and class-leading FWD chassis, however, the Type R won’t be used for high-speed pursuits.

Instead, the hyper hatch is intended as a ‘community engagement’ tool and a means for the police to appeal to the general public through social media. Think of it as the NSW Police’s way of saying “hey guys, we like cars too, and we’re here to make the roads safer, so give us a break.”

Interestingly, even if the NSW Police force wanted to use the Type R as a pursuit vehicle, police cars there need to feature automatic transmissions to meet guidelines, so the manual-only Honda wouldn’t be usable.

As a means to appeal to the community, however, the R is a great way for people to get to know their local Police force.

Anyone in the local area can see the car this Saturday at the Fairfield Police and Community Expo at Emerson Reserve Wetherill Park.

I think the wing will give it enough downforce to drive upside down

They would probably have to arrest themselves for having fun on the roads, Constable charged with hooning… that’s rich

I guess it makes sense since they need to use radios etc while already driving fast and watching our for the traffic

It’s actually a good idea, as any officer can drive any vehicle confidently and competently in an emergency situation. Some will not have ever had a manual car to drive.

Also for Pursuit, Highway Patrol, and General Duties roles, cars have to be AWD or RWD. Civic fails on both fronts.

“even if the NSW Police force wanted to use the Type R as a pursuit vehicle, police cars there need to feature automatic transmissions to meet guidelines”. This is what’s wrong with the world. If officers could do it in the seventies then officers could do it. Ffs.
