Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few days, you’ll know the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro has made itself known to the world. However, it doesn’t go on sale until later this year, so if you’re after a slice of Camaro, why not make it a used fifth-gen version? If you’re tempted, we reckon the ZL1 is the way to go.

Sure, the more hardcore Z/28 is tempting, but with the ZL1 having been around a little longer and the original list price being much lower, it’s more affordable. Case in point? This 2013 example is up for a very reasonable $46,900 (£30,000).

For that, you get a 6.2-litre supercharged ‘LSA’ V8 that’s good for a mighty 572bhp and 556lb ft of torque, and a chassis that kicks the whole ‘muscle cars can’t turn’ adage well and truly to the kerb.

As well as a burly, upgraded transmission, ZL1s also have a more sophisticated set of driver aids than other Camaros, and trick ‘Magnetic Ride’ adjustable dampers. Bringing things to a stop are six-piston brake callipers at the front, with a four piston set up at the rear. All this allowed a ZL1 to belt out a 7min 41sec Nurburgring lap a few years ago. Want some context? That’s about the same time as a 997 Porsche 911 Turbo S. 0-62mph, meanwhile, is possible in just 4.1 seconds.

Live in the UK and fancy a Camaro? Bad news, there are no ZL1s for sale on these shores at the moment, but we did spot this Camaro SS, which is currently up for £24,990.
