Ford’s new mid-engined supercar looks predictably brilliant when you add the livery its GT40 grandad used to wear

The incredible-looking new carbonfibre Ford GT is being created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the GT40’s stunning one-two-three result at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, when we think of a race-spec GT40, the image that comes to mind probably isn’t any of the 1966 cars, but the blue and orange Gulf Oil liveried cars that began to appear a year later.

It’s quite possibly the most famous application of the iconic livery, and is a popular choice for both owners of GT40 replicas and the 2005-2006 GT. We’ll no doubt be seeing the same treatment applied to the new GT somewhere down the line, so here’s a preview of what we can expect.
