How Much Power Will Have This 996 Porsche 911 Lost In 243,000 Miles?

After buying the cheapest 911 he could find - a 1999 996 with a massive 243k on the clock - this guy thought he'd put it on the dyno, to see how many horses have 'escaped' over the years...

I always thought only mechanically tuned engines were susceptible to power loss over time since they lose their tuning. Isn’t this car controlled by an ECU which kind of guarantees the tune will stay the same?

No lol, what happens is parts wear. Piston rings, cylinder walls, valves get grimy, cam lobes wear, lifters get old, gaskets wear down, etc.

complains about having to rev a high mileage car at 243k miles…. meanwhile my (barely driven in) volvo at 239k gets this treatment daily.

Not a single person checked to verify “about the same horsepower as it was new” 239hp after 240,000 miles is 57hp less than new. 1999 911 off the lot was 296hp.

239whp is about 280hp at the crank. 16hp loss is pretty impressive for that kind of mileage.

okay, now thats impressive, same situation i have with my massive 53hp from new 2004 Fiat Panda, saything that, if it lost any more power i dont think it would be able to out drag a mobility scooter :D

Honestly, I think the drop would of been even less. At speed, the cars tail grabs air for the intake to suck in, the intake in the dyno had zero air directed towards. Only a fan for the front radiators. I believe it would of had a few more ponies on top of the 239.

Uh…. you realize the fan just simulates airflow when driving, right? Air doesn’t flow from the back of the car 😂. Would not have made a difference if the fan was at the back.
