When the wraps come off a new Mini we’re usually left wondering how something with a spirit so deeply ingrained with the miniature could become so bloated. With the arrival of this Mini Superleggera Vision concept, however, we were pleasantly surprised. Here is a tiny electric sports car that looks like it was designed with an Aston Martin V12 Zagato in mind.

The concept has been created for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2014, a prestigious classic car show held annually in Italy. Mini teamed up with Touring Superleggera to create what is billed as a combination of classic design and modern internals. Its character comes from the hand-crafted metal sheeting, while on the interior Touring has used traditional materials to give the current Mini cabin a classic feel.

The front-end gets the iconic circular headlights, and an Aston-like grille, but the real talking point is the rear, which features split Union Flag lights and a sleek fin.

Under the hood, the electric drivetrain brings a modern touch to this future-retro sports car. Coupled with its compact dimensions and short overhangs, the Superleggera is probably the most go-kart-like Mini we’ve seen for a long time.

If this were to become a reality, we’d certainly be first in the queue. Mini handling in a compact, Italian-designed sports car? We’ve got time for that!
