Final practice for the last IndyCar race of the 2014 season at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana ended in dramatic fashion when Mikhail Aleshin lost control of his car, spun across the track and collected Charlie Kimball.

The two both hit the outside wall hard, with Aleshin’s car being sent spinning into the catch fencing and the air. Kimball was uninjured in the crash, but Aleshin was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Centre.

IndyCar later confirmed that the Russian driver has been diagnosed with fractured ribs, a broken right clavicle, a concussion and chest injuries. In the latest statement from the series he was listed as in a serious but stable condition. We will bring you any new developments as they are announced.

UPDATE: A statement released by the series yesterday announced that Aleshin’s condition has been upgraded to stable following a procedure for a chest injury.
