It Looks Like The Targa Top Is Coming Back To Ferrari
They may not be the most practical of convertibles, but Targa top cars are still effortlessly cool. From the MkIV Supra to the legendary Targa 911s, we love them to bits. And pretty soon, there might be a new one from Ferrari.
Maranello has produced its fair share of memorable Targas, but aside from a few limited-run cars like the LaFerrari Aperta and 575 Superamerica, it hasn’t made one since the F355 GTS. But judging by a patent (above) filed to the European Patent Office, that could be about to change.
The drawing uses the old F430 as a base, with the car sporting a new removable roof design. The patent describes “a car with a ‘Targa Top’ body,” which is formed of a “coupe body with a rigid roof that is removable and is supported at the front by the upright of the windshield and at the rear by a robust full-width roll bar.”
As to what the new design is destined for (if indeed it ends up being used), the 488 seems the most obvious choice. With the coupe version of the car badged ‘GTB’ - just as the tin top 355 was branded - the Targa version could even revive the GTS name. We also can’t help but dream of a Targa 812, however unlikely that might be.

I have a theory it might just be for a car
Oh. I thought it was for an air plane. Thanks for the insight!
What next?? A convertible motorcycle??
big if true
I could have sworn it was for a Tank

Hang on, isn’t the Laferrari Aperta technically also a Targa?
That’s what they said
Ferrari did at one point make a sunroof version of the 360 that looked a lot like a Targa it was very rare and according to this add only 10 were imported to the US
Not really a targa then… just a removable sunroof

The question is, would they ever think about going into T-top roofs? That would be interesting.
I heard the main reason t tops were killed off was the likelyhood of leaks to form from them, something with the way the glass sits on them makes them harder to seal or something. But I’d love to see t tops come back too
They were much harder to seal, much more likely to leak or even fall off if fitted poorly. Also, as proved by Mike Finnegan of Roadkill, if you have a glass one they’re quite easy to break.
An entry level ‘Dino’ inspired model with the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s V6 is what I want to see
Ferrari’s marketing department would have to go to town after spending a few years insisting the engine isn’t a Ferrari one
An 812 Superamerica??
