It's Official: The Next Kia Ceed Will Go Without The Awkward Apostrophe

Punctuation in car names is just not OK. The Mi.To, as Alfa Romeo originally wanted to call it? Bleugh. Or how about VW with the Up! and T-Roc? Come on - two in one line-up is tantamount to trolling.

Few punctuated car names have looked so awkward and clunky as ‘Kia Cee’d’ though, and it seems the Korean car maker has learned from its mistakes - today we discovered that the next one will simply be the Ceed.

Kia released the above teaser image ahead of the car’s Geneva Motor Show debut next month, and from the looks of it, it’s going to be jolly handsome. And a lot like the Stinger - something we can definitely get on board with.

The five-door hatch will be revealed at the show “alongside a second member of the Ceed family,” Kia says. And by that, the firm is almost certainly referring to the three-door Proceed GT, something previewed by a suspiciously apostrophe-less concept last year. Which, it must be said, also looked stunning.

The new Ceed will go on sale during the second quarter of 2018 “in left-hand-drive markets across Europe.” A UK debut hasn’t been announced yet.

They’ve already spied it in Korea completely devoid of any Camouflage. Its dirty and clearly the base spec, but you can see that if they play their cards right, it’ll be a good looking car in GT-Line and GTS trim. I’m not convinced with the Sorento roof-line, however.

And so Clarkson will just call it the “Cee no apostrophe D” as we all already know he will do. Nice try Kia.

But hey, if any of the concept shots are to be trusted, it will actually look pretty darn cool. Hopefully they’ll wise up and make an AWD turbo 4cylinder version and tap into the sport hatch market some. I’d welcome it.
