The LaFerrari Spider Won't Be Called LaFerrari Spider

The LaFerrari Spider Won't Be Called LaFerrari Spider

There was something rather peculiar about the press release Ferrari sent out to reveal the convertible version of the LaFerrari - the car wasn’t given a name. It was referred to only as the “open-top LaFerrari”, so we - along with much of the rest of the world - dubbed it the ‘LaFerrari Spider’. In fact, it’ll actually be given the much more exclusive ‘Aperta’ designation.

Speculation of the use of the Aperta name had already arisen thanks to images of the car on Ferrari’s own website having “laferrari-aperta-news” in the file name (the images on the press release didn’t, incidentally), and now Autocar is reporting that its sources are “suggesting” that the open-LaF will indeed be named thus.

The LaFerrari Spider Won't Be Called LaFerrari Spider

The Aperta name has only been used on a handful of cars from Ferrari: the 599 SA Aperta, of which only 80 were made, the one-off 599-based P540 Superfast Aperta, and the 458 Speciale A. Well, not quite with the last one, but the A did stand for Aperta so that’s close enough.

The LaFerrari Aperta will be the fastest production Ferrari convertible, with the coupe’s 950bhp hybrid V12 powertrain appearing unaltered. It’s most likely put on a little weight though, given all the chassis stiffening needed to counteract the roof being lopped off.

Ferrari hasn’t revealed how many it’s making or how much each one costs, but it doesn’t really matter - all have been sold. If you’re happy just to sit and stare at it, you can expect to see it at this year’s Paris Motor Show.
