LMP2 Car T-Bones Le Mans Pole-Sitting Toyota In Bizarre Crash
During Wednesday night’s qualifying session, Conway encountered the No.31 DragonSpeed LMP2 car, driven by Roberto Gonzalez, rejoining the circuit at a dodgy angle following a spin (note to Canadian GP stewards: this is an unsafe rejoin!), resulting in a rather spectacular collision.
Both drivers were OK and, surprisingly, the damage to both cars wasn’t as bad as it initially looked - the Toyota even got back out on track before the end of the session, though the team has since elected to replace the entire monocoque.
In an unusual coincidence, both cars involved currently sit on provisional pole in their respective classes, thanks to Kamui Kobayashi in the No.7 Toyota and Pastor Maldonado in the No.31 LMP2 car. Despite becoming a bit of a meme proving alright at this endurance racing malarkey, isn’t he?
As for the No.8 Toyota (better known as ‘the one with Fernando Alonso in it’), traffic was the apparent reason it only sits fourth, with the No.11 SMP Racing and No.3 Rebellion ahead.
There’s still another pair of qualifying sessions this evening before the final grid is set, however, so it could all change.

Maldonado at it again 😂
(note to Canadian GP stewards: this is an unsafe rejoin!) Best part of this article XD
Comment of the year there!
Let’s guess, the SMP was the one with Petrov in it?
Funny thing is that the one who got a penalty is the Toyota LMP1
Are you serious?
