The Mazda MX-5 Spyder And Speedster Are SEMA Miata Concepts On Serious Diets

Since it’s barely heavier than the original Miata, you could hardly accuse the latest MX-5 of being a fatty. However, since SEMA is now upon us and Mazda wanted to bring along something cool, the ladies and gents at the company thought the ND Miata could do with going on a little diet (after all, adding more power might give people the wrong idea).

The result comes in the form of two concepts based on the 2.0-litre version of the MX-5: the Spyder and the Speedster. Both lose the standard ND’s folding roof, but the Spyder does have a replacement in the form of a ‘bikini’ arrangement which will no doubt be spectacularly fiddly to errect when the heavens unexpectedly open.

The Spyder also gets a set of adjustable coilovers, lightweight 17-inch Yokohama rims wrapped in Yokohama Advan A048 rubber and a carbonfibre aero kit. Total weight? A pithy 1043kg.

The Speedster is a little more extreme, losing a windscreen as well as its roof, a little like the NC-based Superlight concept from a few years ago. It sits 30mm lower than the production ND on K&W adjustable coilovers, and is finished off nicely in ‘Blue Ether’ with 16-inch Rays alloys at each corner. Naturally, it’s even lighter than the Spyder, tipping the scales at just 943kg.
