The Mazda RX-Vision Concept Is A Stunning RWD Rotary Coupe That Previews A New RX-7
How many different RX-7 successor rumours have we heard now? One minute it’s going to have clever hybrid tech, the next it’s going to be a Porsche 911 rival with turbo power, and then we have Mazda itself telling us an ‘RX-9’ simply ain’t gonna happen. However, we can now forget all of that, as at the Tokyo Motor Show Mazda has revealed this stunning ‘RX-Vision’ concept, and guess what? As anticipated, it’s packing a rotary engine.
This gorgeous rear-wheel drive coupe is powered by a ‘SkyActiv-R’ engine, something which Mazda describes as a "next-generation rotary engine," pointing out that, "although not currently mass-producing any rotary models, Mazda never ceased its R&D activities".
The intention for this brand-spanking new Wankel is to sort out the main three problems that have dogged previous rotary engines - fuel economy, emissions and reliability.
So, what else do we know? The Porsche Cayman has been mentioned by Mazda as a potential target for any production version of the Vision, but other than that, the company isn’t revealing a whole lot at this stage. However, it’s the talk of production cars which is the important takeaway from the reveal, because the RX-Vision is indeed shaping up to be a preview of the RX-7 successor we’ve been pining after.
Speaking in Tokyo, Mazda president and CEO Masamichi Kogai said, "one day rotary will make a comeback. This gives form to our brand’s vision of the future. It expresses our intention to make rotary. Many issues to overcome but we will continue efforts. We’re working steadily. Keep your eyes on Mazda".
Until we know more, we might as well do exactly that, and spend a little more time ogling this creation. Is it the prettiest thing Mazda has ever come up with?
