The McLaren 650S GT3 Is A Hardcore Racer That's Bent On Motorsport Domination
Ever wanted to be a rich gentleman racing driver? On the off-chance that your answer is ‘no,’ here’s a car that might change that view: the new McLaren 650S GT3. McLaren already has a car in that motorsport category with the very successful 12C GT3 (51 race wins thus far), but with the 650S road car now on the scene, the Woking-based company has given its latest supercar the racing treatment. The results are nothing short of stunning.
Like the 12C GT3, it kicks out 493bhp from its mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8, which is actually less than the road car due to FIA regulations. It features a hefty carbonfibre front splitter, above which are two big intakes to aid cooling. At the back, meanwhile, there’s a large diffuser and a huge fixed carbonfibre wing.
The car’s new profile and redesigned aero devices give a much higher level of downforce, but mechanical grip hasn’t been overlooked. The suspension has been revised, and the track is now 52mm wider compared to the 12C GT3. The braking system is also new, featuring six-piston callipers and 380mm discs at the front, with a four-piston setup at the rear over 355mm discs.
For those running a 12C GT3, all of the 650S GT3’s improvements will be available as an upgrade package. For the whole car, you’ll need to stump up £330,000 plus tax. 15 of these cars will be produced ready for the 2015 race season.
In the UK and fancy seeing this car in the metal? Head along to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it’ll be on display all weekend.
