The Mercedes-AMG S63's 0-130mph Time Is Proof That Four Litres Is Enough

It may not have any more power than the E63 S, but the S63 can still crack out a seriously quick 0-100mph time

While the 2018 Mercedes-AMG S63 doesn’t actually have any more power than the E63 S, with which it now shares a 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine, don’t let that make you think that the larger and heavier car is slow. This video apparently shows the latest hot S-Class in a sprint from 0-137mph, and it’s pretty brisk.

Starting from nothing with no launch control in action, the 604bhp car fires away with no drama and shifts out of first gear at about 40mph before really getting into its stride, mashing second and third gears in no time and ultimately grabbing fourth, passing 100mph like it’s nothing. The driver lifts off in the low 130s, but the sheer momentum of the acceleration takes it up to 137mph before it begins to slow.

The Mercedes-AMG S63's 0-130mph Time Is Proof That Four Litres Is Enough

Although it’s hard to be exact when the digital speedometer makes such big, slow jumps, we reckon the 0-100mph time is somewhere in the region of nine seconds. That’s quick enough for most people, right? We should mention, too, that we’re not sure whether this is the four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive car.

Note the S63’s power and torque usage gauges, the boost gauge and the tyre temperature readouts, all given space on the widescreen digital instrument cluster. This is one fast car that wants to tell you all about how large its numbers are while it’s stomping towards the horizon, but with this sort of pace it’s better if you keep your eyes on the road…

Lovely Puppeteer

4 L isn’t even that small! And with 604 BHP, I bet it’s a blast to drive. Plus it’s a comfy Benz!

Mclaren and Porsche have proven for years that less than 4L is enough.

We should mention, too, that we’re not sure whether this is the four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive car.

The text in the beggining clearly states the car is AWD, hence the presence of 4MATIC in the name.

The “63” is what the series called and it doesn’t describe the engine’s litres

I love this engine, but
“car fires away with no drama”
Thats the problem
Cars are becoming much faster, no doubt
But increasingly less interesting..
I’d be happy to sacrifice the speed for a 6.2-L naturally-aspirated V8 sound
