The idea of a mid-engine Corvette has been considered for years. We had the Aerovette concept way back in the 1970s, and the C7 ‘Vette may well have ended up having a mid-engine layout if it wasn’t for General Motor’s financial woes at the time of its inception. However, it’s at last happening.

Recent spy shots (above) appeared to show a mid-engine Corvette test mule, and now we even have an ETA. Citing multiple sources “familiar with the company’s planning,” Detroit News reports that the C8 - codenamed ‘Emperor’ - will be here in 2019, speculating that the switch to a mid-ship power plant is down to Chevrolet wanting to attract younger buyers.

The C8’s arrival won’t immediately kill off the C7. According to Detroit News, the Z06 and Grand Sport models will continue until 2021, at which point the front-engine Corvette will become a thing of the past.

Lets call it the — Corvair Z06 — and leave the sales dominating race winning flagship of Chevrolet alone. I can already see stocks plummeting. And what happens if the camaro starts to beat it in the racing series. Chevy continually beats porsche, ferrari, and aston in the racing circuit with its oldschool front engine formula. Trying to fix something thats not broken almost always ends badly.

I feel like GM should keep the Corvette front engine, and introduce another supercar-like platform with a mid engine as well. 2019 Cadillac XLR?

My dad was good friends with one of the big guys at GM named Vick Hickey, he wanted to make a mid engined, AWD corvette in the 90’s but they turned him down.

NO! They should not do this just for some youngster. I am a teenager but I still prefer the old-school corvettes and camaros with engines in the front. They just should not do it first the Viper and now Corvette.😭

What’s this going to do to the price? A good percentage of its buyers can’t afford a 911; but if it does lay eye to eye in pricing with one it better blow the doors off of it
