The 'Mustang-Inspired' Ford Mach 1 EV Will Have A 370-Mile Range
Ford seems rather keen on digging up names from its past right now. This week we’ve learned that there’ll be a new Puma, and last year, the company announced that it would be reviving ‘Mach 1’. Both will be a radical departure from the cars that previously used the badges: the Puma is a compact crossover, and the Mach 1 an all-electric SUV.
We still don’t know a great deal about the Mach 1, but to tie in with the Ford’s multiple reveals this week - which included the new Kuga and Escape - it was announced that the vehicle will have a WLTP range of up to 370 miles. Or more neatly, 600 kilometres.
The link to the old Mustang Mach 1 will be via the styling rather than the mechanical stuff - it’ll be based on the same platform as the current Focus, with bodywork ‘inspired’ by the ‘Stang.
So far all we’ve seen of it is the teaser at the top of this page, but a full reveal at some point in 2019 should be expected. First deliveries will kick off in 2020.
The Mach 1 is part of Ford’s SUV and pick-up truck-focused reinvention, which will see almost all of its conventional cars disappear from the firm’s North American line-up next year.

I’m going to get hated and probably killed but:
It’s time we accept this. Mustang isn’t a “Mustang”. Toyota GT86 isn’t an “ae86”. People who bought Mustangs in the 60s and 70s were cool. Every girl wanted to boyfriend a guy with a Mustang. Every Mustang driver was a f-boi. Then, 90s and 2000s happened. Eclipse drivers became cool. Everyone wanted a small coupe. Same with the Puma. Every girl wanted to boyfriend a guy in an Eclipse. Eclipse drivers were f-bois. Today however, people who drive crossovers and SUVs are f-bois. Mustangs (and Eclipse) are nothing more than “macho” cars to most of their buyers,
It makes sense to name a crossover Eclipse, Puma and even Mustang. Why? Because 90% of buyers of the Mustang in the 60s and 70s didn’t give a single f about it’s performance, engine or about the car in general. They bought them because it appealed to the females and would make them look cool and make their f-boi life easier.
Manufacturers are absolutely spot on the naming scheme. A guy who bought a Mustang in the 60s and the dude who bought an Eclipse in the 90s/2000s and a dude that will buy this Mustang crossover have one thing in common. They want to be “macho” and that’s all.
As for the car, I find it’s specs impressive, but that’s a topic for an another time.

But the mustang and the eclipse were actually good cars. This will never be a ‘classic’ or working class hero like the original mustang, and nobody is going to want to restore one in 50 years. It’s just tragic that manufacturers are just taking a dump on people who actually like the original car.
This only works if the car they are purchasing is also macho. A man trying to recapture his youth is much more likely to buy a 2+2 coupe or something similar than something such as the Eclipse. I will yield that your argument is much more representative of the Mach 1, however I would still argue that the name does more to alienate both sides rather than appeal to them.

They talk about appealing to enthusiasts but advertise the range. Not the power, not the torque, not the speed… nope, range. I remember when only Prius’ cared about range statistics.

thats not a mach 1. the mach 1 is a mustang that has a 429 cobra jet. Its not a real mach 1 if it dose not have a big block.
No one said it was a “real mach 1”..its called that but its a different car. Most people will get the difference.
The only thing im really waiting for from ford is the new bronco….im not a fan of using the mach 1 or mustang name on a crossover….but crossovers sell and no one can come up with any good names anymore. Hopefully this crossover trend dies out soon and people go back to regular shaped cars

they could’ve atleast added a few more batteries to make the range 667kms, since mach 1 in knots is 667kn, so it would have atleast something to do with it
