The New BMW 5-Series Touring Is The Smarter Way To Carry All Your Stuff
By now, I’m sure we shouldn’t have to explain why estates - or wagons - are cooler than saloons. That’s just science fact, and few are as cool and understated as the 5-series Touring. This is why BMW caught our attention when revealing the Touring version of the all-new G30 5-series, dubbed G31.
It’s a jolly dashing lump of metal, no? And it’s also a relatively light one. As with the saloon 5er, the Touring is larger in almost every way compared to the outgoing car, and yet has dropped 100kg in weight.
That’s no real surprise, nor is the fact the saloon’s engine line-up has been mostly carried over. The range kicks off with the 188bhp 520d, with the 261bhp 530d sitting above with optional xDrive all-wheel drive.
On the petrol front there’s a 530i with a 248bhp 2.0-litre turbo four-pot, and the 540i with BMW’s b58 3.0-litre straight-six putting out 335bhp. There’s no mention of an M550i xDrive Touring just yet, but we’re crossing our fingers. The 540i is currently the quickest, dispatching 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds.
Also carried over from the four-door version is a whole host of safety gadgets. These include a cross traffic warning, pedestrian safety warning and a lane keeping and lane changing assist that’ll work at speeds of up to 130mph. Because autobahn.
In addition, BMW’s new infotainment system with gesture control functionality is present, and a new head-up display with a 70 per cent larger projection surface is optional.
Want one? It goes on sale this June, priced at £38,385 and up. It’ll make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Does it come with indicators?
Why would you ask?
Yes but the indicators are just for looks
While that old joke is funny and I do use it on myself and on my dad for the giggles, I’d actually like to point out how if you wanna use lane keeping and lane changing assist you’ll actually need to use your indicators to change lanes. In fact, I always found it funny how on my dad’s f11 the adaptative cruise control only speeds you up for an overtake if you signal it. BMW is trying to change their drivers’ habits haha
And I already drove one of the G30s ^^ Check my Instagram @thestigsgermancousin
How was it?
Lucky! I just want to see one then Ill be satisfied
Beamng predicted this
Aaayy, BeamNG.drive. It would be cool if the offered the highest performing version as a wagon, as they do in Beam.
That’s more like a 3-Series Estate for me.
This is one hot BMW estate and i hope that they make a M version just like the E61 M5
hopefully the v8 is louder then the standing f10 m5. the e61 needs a proper replacement
Its extremely unlikely as theres no real market for hot estates in most countries. I’d love one so that i can do skids while carrying spare rear tires to change in between
Mark Mason
Anyone have £38,385 I can have?
Gives Mark even more to buy an M550i
Let me guess, not coming to the US -_-.
Most probably not. Wagons don’t sell very well in the USA, so alot of marques don’t even offer them there even though they could. Just take the Ford Mondeo (aka Fusion) Turnier or the beautiful Volvo V60 they wouldn’t offer in the USA until three years after its introduction in Europe for example.
Its sexy its sexy its sexy. I want i want i fcking want
I yearn for a G30 M5 Touring…
It’s all about practicality.
