Like the look of the Mercedes-AMG GT, but fancy a more practical version? You’re in luck: the ladies and gents at Affalterbach have cooked up just that. Well, sort of: this new ‘GT Four-Door Coupe’ may have derived its striking styling from the GT coupe, but it’s not just a massively elongated version of the existing car.

In fact, it’s a rather different animal underneath. It’s based on the same platform used by the E-Class and CLS, and unlike the coupe, it’s all-wheel drive, and is available with a straight-six. To complicate matters further, it’s also quite different to the E-Class, with a much longer wheelbase and the rear-axle steering system pinched from the two-door GT.

The aforementioned inline-six is in the entry-level AMG GT 53 model, and it’s the same engine found in the new CLS 53. It displaces 3.0 litres, and kicks out 432bhp and 384lb ft of torque. But, as in the CLS, it has a little trick up its sleeve: EQ Boost. This is an electrically-driven compressor that gives a brief but punchy shot of 22bhp and 184lb ft, combatting turbo lag.

At the shoutier end of the proceedings, we have the AMG GT 63 and 63 S. Both are powered by AMG’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, albeit the ‘M177’ version rather than the two-door GT’s ‘M178’, meaning it uses wet sump lubrication rather than dry.

The regular 63 has 577bhp and 590lb ft, trumped ever so slightly by the S with 630bhp and a monstrous 663lb ft of twist. Even though both tip the scales at over two tonnes, they’re brutally fast off the line thanks to the joys of all-wheel drive traction, with 0-62mph possible in 3.4 and 3.2 seconds respectively. At the top end, the 63 is all out of ideas at 192mph, while the 63 S tops out at 195mph.

The interior is a curious mix of CLS and AMG GT, with a swoopy dashboard married to an imposing centre console. Where the centre console differs from the GT is the stack of buttons either side: each one doubles as a tiny display screen, showing you what you’ve changed on the car - e.g. damper stiffness. There are also multi-function versions of these buttons on the steering wheel, so you can quickly change the car’s setup without taking one hand off to prod the centre console.

As standard the saloon-ified GT comes as a five-seater, but an optional centre console for the rear passengers is available, taking up the middle seat. The rear-most occupants are given a display screen that - for some reason - shows them exactly how the driver has set the car up (to prepare them for incoming terror, perhaps?), and more usefully, cup holders that can either cool or heat your beverage. Neat.

Sales are expected to kick off later this year, with pricing yet to be confirmed. Would you have one of these, or a Porsche Panamera?

Mercedes line-up is a complete mess…

Firstly, the naming. “Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S Four Dour Coupe”? Is the two-door now called “Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S Two Dour Coupe”? Or just “AMG GT”? Also why does it have the 63 designation and the original doesn’t?

Secondly, the CLS. They said they won’t make CLS63 so it doesn’t clash with the “Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Four Dour Coupe”. Yet they made CLS53 and the AMG GT Four Dour Coupe with the same engine?
And they said they won’t make the CLS Shooting Brake, although it would actually help to diversify the two cars? Wtf?

Thirdly, the engines. They said AMG GT Black Series won’t happen and the AMG GT R is the range-topper. Yet the E63 S and now the four dour AMG GT both have more power than the GT R?

Still awesome cars, but I think they need to stop for a second and sort out the mess in the hierarchy and the line-up
