New Porsche Cayman: The Rich Man's GT86

It's here, with the Boxster's buff looks and a chunk off the 911's big prices. Queue here...

No-one buys Caymans. It's the slowest-selling car Porsche makes, despite being a gem to drive. Take, that, Cayenne and Panamera-haterz! Anyway, Porker haven't given up. Their back with a lighter, faster Cayman. Oh, and it's gorgeous.

The big intakes, neat rear wing and wide track are hallmarks of the new Boxster, but the fixed roof has been swept right back to give a proper sports car profile, like a teeny 911. And as we know, small is beautiful...

Power comes in two flavours: tangy 2.7-litre 271bhp, and downright spicy 321bhp 3.4-litre if you opt for the S. (You want the S. Split tailpipes for the win.)

Thinking of a diet for the new-year resolution? The Cayman beat you to it. It's 30kg down on the old car, meaning the quickest car with launch control hits 62mph in 4.7sec. Should keep a few M3 owners honest, yet alone the bigger, way more expensive 911.

Okay, lets talk prices. Arguably, this is the best-looking, most pure sports car Porsche makes right now, and it costs from £39,694. Not too bad, we reckon, considering this is an everyday car, a track day hero, and has one of the best badges ever glued to a bonnet. Chuck a few tasty options an an S and you're looking at £50 grand, but I'll stick my neck out and say that's a better buy than a £75,000 Jaguar F-type.

So, one of these, or a 911?
