We headed to Rolls-Royce's Goodwood HQ to check out the updated Ghost, a luxury land-yacht that weighs more than two VW Golfs and hits 62mph as quickly as a Porsche 911.

Under that long bonnet is a 6.6-litre V12 that produces 555bhp, which wafts you along in sumptuously quiet comfort. However, plant your foot and you'll surge to 62mph from a standstill in 4.9sec.

It also gets the Satellite Aided Transmission debuted on the Wraith last year, which uses the sat-nav to recognise upcoming roads and ensures the appropriate gear is prepared.

The front end gets the most obvious alterations, with all-new LED headlights surrounded by delightful daytime running lights that mock the gaudily bright examples you see on daily runabouts. The Spirit of Ecstasy now leaves a 'wake channel,' designed to evoke images of your private jet's vapour trail, or the wake of the luxury yacht you take to the south of France each summer.

The Ghost is aimed at 'captains of industry' and entrepreneurs who need somewhere quiet and luxurious to conduct their business. As such you'll be unsurprised to learn that the interior is a wonderful place to be. Behind the wheel you're treated to ample space, with swathes of chrome and piano black trim adorning the dashboard. In the back there is plenty of room to conduct important work, with television monitors and a desk built into the back of the chairs in front of you.

To reiterate the fact that this high-roller isn't for us normal people, it'll set you back around £200,000 once you've added some personal touches - 95 per cent of RR buyers have some kind of bespoke personalisation. Time to start saving the pennies.
