The New Toyota Supra Will Be Here In 2018

When taking a look at the latest batch of Toyota Supra successors rumours last week, speculation naturally turned to when exactly we might see the finished product. This week, it seems we have the answer: according to some mysterious “new information” cited by Autocar, we’re looking at a 2018 launch for the Supra. The related BMW Z4 successor - which may be named Z5 - will arrive slightly before.

For both cars, we can expect a hybrid powertrain with an engine powering the rear wheels, and electric motors powering the front hoops, in a similar fashion to the BWM i8 and Honda NSX. It’s thought BMW will take care of the engine, while the motors and hybrid system will be the work of Toyota.

Other than the shared powertrain, the Supra and Z5 will be very different cars. Just like its predecessor, the Z5 will be a cabriolet, and will look vastly different to the tin-top Supra, which will take styling inspiration from 2014’s FT-1 concept (above). Since the FT-1 is flipping gorgeous, that’s a jolly good thing. It’s set to be longer than the Z5 too, as the new jointly developed platform is scalable.

Which would you have: the BMW, or the Toyota?

This could work well for me if this reduces the MK4 Supra prices because I’m going to be looking at buying a MK4 Supra in 2018/2019. Or It could be bad for me if it raises them..

As a huge Supra fan, I am not looking forward to this. Supposedly the engine is a 4 cylinder with electric motors? That’s no Supra! If Toyota wants a new Supra, they need to give it a bulletproof detuned inline 6 or hell, even a V6. The 2JZGTE was the PERFECT engine for the Supra because it was rock solid and you could make tons of power with it and it’ll be reliable as stock holding all that power.

This new Supra will not have that same “tuneability”. This is what I dislike about Japanese cars, and most cars in general today. All these complicated electronics are getting in the way of modifications. When I think of JDM culture, I think of having a badass car that you can wrench on yourself in your garage that has a wide variety of performance parts that you can really customize your car with. I do not think of a computer that you cannot do anything to without having to bring it to a professional shop. The GTR pulled this off very well. Despite being very high tech, people could still do a lot of things to them. I do not see this happening in the future of cars with all this technology

Everyone thought the same with the GT-R… look at it now. Just give it time since some companies will do their best to crack it.
