Given its incredible popularity, the Corsa is a car which Vauxhall (and parent company Opel) doesn’t really want to muck up. As such, a rather conservative approach has been taken with the fourth generation of the supermini, which has been revealed today. This is particularly clear from the exterior, which looks much like a Vauxhall Adam after a growth spurt. That being said, it’s not exactly bad-looking, and once it’s wearing the sportier clothes of the eventual hot VXR model, it should be a handsome little thing.

From launch, the Corsa will be available with three engines, two petrol and one diesel. The first is a 1.0-litre three-pot turbo ECOTEC engine, available with either 89bhp or 113bhp, joined by a more conventional naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre four-pot with 69bhp. The oil-burner is a 1.3-litre CDTi available with either 74bhp or 94bhp. All will send power to the front wheels via a six-speed speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.

The future VXR version isn’t yet official news, but Vauxhall has all but confirmed that one will be on the way soon. With the current hot Corsa kicking out 189bhp, expect the new one to be pushing 200bhp.

The underpinnings and many of the suspension components are all new. The front sub-frame is stiffer, the knuckle joints new, while the dampers have also been subject to a fiddle.

The interior is a simple and uncluttered design, with a seven inch touchscreen in the centre console, which controls Vauxhall’s ‘IntelliLink’ system, which is rather usefully compatible with both Android and Apple phones. The car goes on sale this October, with prices yet to be announced.
