The Next-Gen Porsche 911 Could Have Two Hybrid Versions
The incoming ‘992’-generation Porsche 911 will have a hybrid option. You know that; we know that; the whole motoring world knows that. But what you probably didn’t know is that there could be two plug-in hybrid versions in the range, according to a new report from Auto Express.
One will be a hypercar-baiting monster which could well be the range-topping version of the 911. The Panamera range is currently topped by the Turbo S E-Hybrid, so that’s certainly something we can see happen.
According to an insider source, the second hybrid 992 will be pitched as a Carrera alternative. A naturally-aspirated flat-six with a hybrid boost for the low end is a tantalising prospect, but before you get too excited, we’d say that a new version of the standard Carrera’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine with supplementary electric assistance seems more likely.
One of the biggest issues for Porsche to combat is weight. By AE’s reckoning, the hybrid gubbins could add as much as 250kg, placing the 911 firmly in ‘fatty’ territory. The engineers are thought to be using lessons learned in the development of the 918 Spyder and Cayenne E-Hybrid to make sure the car is as agile as a 911 should be.
Expect the next 911 to be revealed late 2018 or early 2019.

It was inevitable tbh. Either they go hybrid or fully electric in the future. I’d choose the former.

918 was a Hybrid 911 with serious mods.
If anyone does sporty hybrids well, it’s Porsche. And remember that the N/A GT3 will still exist for as long as Porsche race the RSR (they have to have the engine in a road car for homologation purposes).
But personally I would rather they make the hypercar-spec car into a separate model. Bring back the 959 name?
