The Next Lamborghini Huracan Will Be A Plug-In Hybrid

The next Lamborghini Huracan will be a plug-in hybrid using next-gen battery technology, according to reports.

It’s going to employ solid-state batteries that will carry more charge for less weight than current technologies, the idea being to maintain the car’s admirable dynamic qualities. The Urus SUV is known to be the first Lamborghini to use the petrol-electric setup, but the Huracan will be its first hybrid sports car.

There’s no information about the V10 yet. Will it keep it, or downsize to a turbocharged V8? Or, and you might want to sit down for this, maybe even a blown V6 like the Ford GT? A part-electric turbo V6 drivetrain would easily out-muscle the current V10, after all…

The Next Lamborghini Huracan Will Be A Plug-In Hybrid

In an interview with Autocar, the company’s boss Stefano Domenicali said:

“The [next] Huracan – that car will need hybridisation. Hybridisation is the answer, not [full] electric.

“There is still a lot of potential for the V12. The right approach for us is to have the V10 and V12 to suit our customers and then be ready to switch [to a hybrid] at the right moment.”

Lamborghini is working with the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on composite materials and alternative battery technologies. The apparent production target for a production hybrid Huracan is the early 2020s.

Sister company Porsche has also been looking at solid-state batteries, but part of Lamborghini’s work with MIT involves trying to differentiate the technologies from rival sports car makers. We hope they can come up with something special.
