Next Toyota GT86 Arrives Summer 2021 With 260bhp Turbo Engine
It’s all change for the next Toyota GT86. The coupe will be much more powerful, use a turbocharged engine, and won’t even be called GT86 - in line with the Japanese’s company’s more recent performance cars, it’s expected to adopt the mantle ‘GR86’.
Key details for the car have been divulged via a presentation slide and other details purportedly leaked from a dealer conference, as posted on GR86.org. According to this new information, we’re looking at an output of 256bhp (260hp) from a 2.4-litre boxer engine.
As with the current GT86, that engine will be supplied by Subaru, which will make its own BRZ-badged version of the GR86. That matches the output of the recently developed 2.4-litre ‘FA24’ found in the Ascent, an engine we’re anticipating to be the starting point for a 400bhp boxer designed for the next WRX STI.
Complain all you want about its lack of power and the torque hole, but the naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre boxer with its 7000rpm peak power mark is one of the GT86’s USPs. The FA24, in contrast, develops its output at 5600rpm. Hopefully, it’ll be tweaked to have a livelier top end in the GR86.
In any case, the GT86’s main draw - its front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout - will be retained. It’ll have a better interior, too, and it hopefully should still be relatively affordable, given that Toyota will need to slot it under the inline-four version of the GR Supra.

The prayers have been heard!
I dont realy know but i allways like a more driving focused na to rev allong. Torque is nice and all but i dont know how it will effect the driving characteristics and a redline of 5600 seem a little lacking but who knows maybe they will tweek it right and it will be nice with easy tuning.
I’m pretty sure the redline isn’t set at 5600rpm, that’s just the peak power mark.
Hopefully the redline is at least 6500 rpm which is typical for a turbocharged engine
It’s not a5600 redline, it’s a5600 peak power
The redline will be a minimum of 6700 RPM. That’s peak power at 5600 RPM. That’s a good thing.
This is the greatest news I have heard so far today :D
Makes it much more identical to the Nissan Silvia
I hope this isnt an april fools joke …
They killed Sion for this car a
Scion* Autocorrect
I wont believe it until I see a press release from Toyota
Why… They could have had the 2.4L Boxer with 245HP N/A, just like they had the 2.0L Boxer with 205HP.
Now what did they accomplish?
Way lower RPM limit, slightly more torque for a short period of time in a small RPM range, more stress on the engine, lower compression, etc..
I personally think they should have a high revving N/A version of this too.
But it would never happen, because the GT86 only comes with one engine.
Maybe i’m just too negative, but high revving cars were a lot of fun.
The FA20D revs to 7.5K RPM, but the FA24 only revs to 6.7K RPM. I’m sure Toyota will want to increase it slightly as to not remove that aspect of it, so I’m assuming a 7K RPM redline. But that 500 RPM loss will give:
This seems like a win to me.
I almost thout that is april fools, this quarantine is killing my time orientation…
Bad move in my opinion. In theory, the turbo is only pushing 15hp more then an NA version could push. Turbo is hurting the throttle response and probably going to cut the RPM limit. In a car like the 86, I’d rather take a low end torque hit to gain a higher RPM limit.
Car guys: THE GT86 IS TO LOW POWERED REEE!
Toyota: OK so how about this GR86 whith 260hp!
