Mercedes team bosses Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe sat down with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton earlier today to discuss the events of last weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

Rosberg and Hamilton collided on the second lap of the race at Spa-Francorchamps. The contact punctured the 2008 world champion’s tyre, with the floor damage causing his retirement later on, costing the team a one-two finish.

In a statement released today, Mercedes confirmed that Rosberg has “acknowledged his responsibility” and apologised to Hamilton for the clash.

It was also revealed that “suitable disciplinary measures” have been taken and that the team’s policy of allowing its drivers to race freely will remain. However, further contact will not be tolerated.

Both drivers released their own statements shortly after. Rosberg owned up to his “error of judgement”, apologising to Hamilton and F1 fans. He added that he is looking forward to “concluding the season with hard, fair competition on and off track right up to the final lap of the season in Abu Dhabi”.

Meanwhile Hamilton said everyone came together to discuss their differences, saying both drivers accepted that they made mistakes. He added: “I feel it would be wrong to point fingers and say which one is worse than the other. What’s important is how we rise as a team from these situations. We win and we lose together and, as a team, we will emerge stronger.”
