No, Apple Isn't Going To Take Over McLaren
After a sudden influx of rumours surrounding Apple and the British supercar brand, a spokesperson at McLaren has come forward and declared that the company is “not in discussion with Apple in respect of any potential investment.”
An article from the Financial Times today set the ball rolling, dictating Apple’s attempt to “transform the car industry” with a financial takeover of McLaren on top of their plans to manufacture a self-driving electric vehicle.
Apple has been seeking an inlet to the automotive industry for the past couple of years, making calls like hiring ex-Tesla executive Chris Porritt to aid the company’s latest developments. However, with funding being cut from its automotive programme in recent months, it appears that Apple is looking to venture into the operating systems and internals used to power a vehicle, rather than producing an entire car themselves.
Although McLaren has denied any takeover talks, that does not rule out any attempt from Apple to gain some vital knowledge from McLaren Special Operations on its expertise in electric motors and lightweight materials from the P1 programme.
Could McLaren’s cars be filled with Apple technology in the near future? We’ll have to wait and see…
