Following this incident, Rossi was handed three penalty points by the MotoGP stewards, taking his tally to four and meaning he will start the title decider at Valencia from the back of the grid.

The Yamaha rider got caught up in a ferocious battle with Marquez early in the Malaysian GP. He had already revealed his frustration earlier on in the fight but going through Turn 14, he ran wide as Marquez tried to pass him around the outside.

Just as Rossi looked across at Marquez, the two collided and the reigning champion fell and retired from the race. Rossi continued, finishing third and keeping the result, meaning he now leads Jorge Lorenzo by seven points.
