The Pointless Mini Coupe And Roadster Models Are Being Killed Off
With the Countryman, Paceman and Clubman to name but a few, that retro Mini shape has been stretched and bloated into all sorts of weird and not always wonderful niche cars. However, the brand is set to lose a couple before too long: the Coupe and the Roadster.
Mini USA Product Planning Manager Patrick McKenna told Auto Guide at the LA Motorshow that the two cars - which are based on the previous generation Mini hatch - have “run their life cycle” and will go out of production next year. There’s no word on a replacement for either, but as this is part of a move to focus on higher-volume models, it seems unlikely.
We’re not exactly sad to see them go. And regardless of our feelings about the cars, it’s a smart decision, as both were a bit of a hard sell. The coupe looks particularly weird, as though it’s the regular hatch with a squashed roof and the car equivalent of a back-to-front baseball cap added. When it comes to a drop-top model, the marque already has that ticked with the Mini Convertible, making the roadster a little redundant.
Now it seems slimming down the Mini range is on the agenda, which versions would you like to see get the axe?
