Porsche has smashed the record for fastest production car around the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The 918 Spyder's time of 6min 57sec is 14 seconds faster than the previous record of 7min 11sec set by the Gumpert Apollo Sport in August 2009.

The £657,400, 887hp plug-in hybrid supercar covered the 20.6 kilometre stretch at an average speed of 111mph and was piloted by factory race driver Marc Lieb.

Porsche's news comes just days after the McLaren P1 unofficially clocked a time of 7min 04sec. Because McLaren wasn't happy with the time, we never heard about it, however. When the P1 does dip under seven minutes (which it will), expect fireworks.

Until then, congratulations go to Porsche, the undisputed king of the Nürburgring.
