Is Porsche About To Make A 928 Successor?

You can’t help but feel sad that the legendary Porsche 928 was never replaced. The Panamera may be a kinda/sorta successor, but unless it’s a coupe, it just doesn’t count, does it?

However, it looks like the 928 is about to be resurrected properly for a 2019 debut, reports Auto Bild. Panamera-based test mules have been spotted already, sporting what look to be ‘false’ rear doors. The German publication admits the name is a matter of “pure speculation” at this point - Porsche may not choose ‘928’ for the name, perhaps opting for ‘929’ instead.

A big coupe would be something of a surprise from Stuttgart, but as evidenced by the Sport Turismo, Porsche is keen to do the unexpected in these SUV-obsessed times. And speaking of SUV-obsessed, here’s something a little more predictable on the way from Porsche, according to the German publication: a Cayenne ‘coupe’.

Imagine this, but with less headroom for rear-seat passengers...
Imagine this, but with less headroom for rear-seat passengers...

The likes of the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLC coupe are among the most nonsensical of all SUVs, but that doesn’t stop people buying the things. Porsche’s take on this weirdly successful SUV sub-genre is expected to appear later in the year.

No prizes for guessing which of these two future Porsches has a place in our fantasy garage…

If done right, 928 would allow Porsche to achieve to things:

1) Reduce average emissions (nobody would mind a hybrid/electric drivetrain on a comfy GT) and thus stick to pure flat-six engines in the 911 for longer

2) make the 911 more hardcore and driver focused (as those who want a comfy 911 can get the 928)

Pls let it happen

yeah but wont a 928 be too expensive

as the majority of 911 Sales are from the lower end comfy versions like the 4S or Targas as they cost pretty cheap( around 80k) and yet you get a good mix of GT and Sport

a 929 would be too expensive for some of these 911 buyers

honestly this is great for Porsche
as their profiting highly in the past 10 years, its no suprise theyre doing some R&D and a “929” would be perfect in this S65/Continental GT market

now i just hope they still use the V8

This should really have replaced the 911 like it was planned to do

2 door panamara turbo se-hybrid

That would close the circle of 928, as the panamera atleast as an idea came from a 4 door 928
