Porsche Blasts Aussie Politicians Over New Outback Speed Limit

Australia is planning to reintroduce a controversial speed limit despite the government's own evidence saying that the move is likely to raise fatalities. Porsche is not happy about it

Porsche has hit out at the new Australian government as the nation prepares to reintroduce speed limits to remote Northern Territory roads for ‘safety reasons’ – despite evidence that it would actually make things worse.

The German sports car maker has accused the Aussie rulemakers of creating a nanny state. Australia’s ABC News quotes Porsche spokesman Paul Ellis as saying: “It seems the Northern Territory government is doing its best to deter international car companies from coming to Australia to spend money and invest in the local economy.”

He went on to add: “Speed does not kill; bad driving kills [do]. It’s just a shame we’ve taken a nanny state approach.”

Speed limits in the vast area were originally canned in 2014, after the government collated research showing that their introduction in 2007 had caused deaths to rise.

But the newly-installed Labour administration, which won a landslide victory just weeks ago, has pledged to reintroduce an 81mph (130kmh) limit along the 200-mile stretch of road. Medical experts have called for the move, saying that higher speeds lead to greater risk of serious injuries and deaths. Is it just us, or have they not looked at those government figures from 2014?

TV crews like those working with Top Gear and The Grand Tour can still apply to derestrict a section for filming purposes, said a spokesman.

Porsche actually used the area to set a top-speed run in a 918 Spyder. Check out the footage below.

Australia is the weirdest of places in so many ways, and it does seem to be becoming a full on nanny state. Internet, firearms, anti-hooning laws… I’m sure an Aussie will list more.

Anti-association laws for members of a Motorcycle Club, restrictions on modifying vehicles. Speed bumps that’ll make anything less than a Land Cruiser bottom out on. Anything bigger than a kitchen knife being illegal without a license. This country used to be great, now it’s a nursery

I’m Aussie and the car laws here are ridiculous you hit the nail on the head I love in Queensland were the speed limits are already horrible and the vehicle restrictions for P plate drivers are unbelievably strict

3km/h speed limit tolerance, blanket ban on phones while driving for p platers EVEN if you have bluetooth, ban on mustangs linelocker mode, you will be linched if your wheels spin or your car is louder than a hushed whisper, sneaky cars with speed cameras mounted on the dashboard, cameras mounted behind road signs in random places, I could go on for so long….

“Medical experts have called for the move, saying that higher speeds lead to greater risk of serious injuries and deaths”.
First of all, where is their context for the Northern Territory, and secondly as a scientist you should do your background research, and understand that there will be anomalies!

Exactly, when there’s nothing around and nothing happening, your biggest risk of an accident is falling asleep due to boredom, travelling at a higher speed lowers said risk as you’re in that situation for a lot less time

Unfortunately, many scientists/engineers/researchers take money from corporations to falsify data or make up claims. That is why global warming was so hard to push, when ExxonMobil knew about global warming since 1981.

How can a country that has an environment that can kill you in 1000 different ways decide “we’ll put a speed limit on this deserted straight road because it may cause deaths, yes we are going to be a nanny state”

And then worst of all, if you’re driving slowly and the car breaks down…You probably won’t get out of there alive, or in one piece…
