Porsche is developing a new 718 Boxster GTS that will stretch the 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo behind the two seats right up to 375bhp.

A new exhaust system is going to make its debut on the car, too, in an attempt to make the car’s controversial engine sound better.

After the success of the old GTS in bridging the gap between the Boxster S and Boxster Spyder, Porsche wants to recreate that old range structure for 2018. A 718 Cayman GTS will arrive at the same time, we understand.

Sadly we don’t have the rights to use any spy photos so we have to bring you pics of the old car, which, after all, used the same chassis as the 718 and is the same size and shape. There will be differences, though, with a revised nose among them.

Autocar reports that the GTS brothers will use the Boxster S’s 2.5-litre engine, but it’s unconfirmed whether items like the turbocharger will be swapped for beefier components. The 2.5’s specific output in the Boxster S is lower than that of the 2.0 in the standard car, so we reckon there’s room for a boost in the 2.5.

That boost should be around the 20-30bhp window; enough to make the slightest tangible difference without getting too near to the output of a basic 911 Carrera. Expect the usual suite of options, by which we mean expect to be able to double the price of the car by the time you’ve finished adding extras…

As for an asking price, we’d agree with Autocar that it’s likely to get close to £65,000. Both cars should feature at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, just a couple of months from now.

“enough to make the slightest tangible difference without getting too near to the output of a basic 911 Carrera”

A 2K14 Cayman S/GTS with PDK was already working better than a base 991 Carrera. And both the GT4 and 718 S pdk are more performant than a S 991. + the current base 911 is 370hp, the Spyder and GT4 are 375 and 385hp cars, while waiting 240lbs less…

More sonorous? The thousands of us who made the leap to the new 718 Cayman S PDK with sport exhaust actually prefer the powerful, deep sound of the new engine resembling the sound BD of a small V8. Eye of the beholder my friend!
