Porsche has created its own one-making race class for this year’s Pikes Peak extravaganza, restricted to variants of the Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

This is the first time Pikes Peak has ever seen a one-make class, and entries are being limited to just eight cars. Oh, and it’s invitation-only, so no, you can’t have a go. Up for grabs is the snappily-named “Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Pikes Peak Hill Climb Trophy by Yokohama.” And breathe.

Three versions of the GT4 Clubsport can compete in the 24 June race. The first is the regular Clubsport, then the Clubsport MR in GT4 track spec, and finally the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Clubsport in GS-class trim.

All the cars should produce 380-500bhp and can reach 175mph or so. We don’t yet know if the more powerful cars will bear a weight penalty over the regular Clubsport’s 1300kg to even the odds.

The eight invited participants will be coached at the course by Jeff Zwart, an eight-time class winner in Porsche 911s. Another legend and defending overall winner, Romain Dumas, will be on hand to advise and assist.

Provided all goes well, the one-make class will become a regular fixture in future Pikes Peak events.
