Porsche Might Have Just Smashed Lamborghini's Nurburgring Lap Record

Porsche might have just broken the production petrol car Nurburgring lap record with the bonkers 911 GT2 RS, but agonisingly we probably won’t know for sure for weeks – or even months.
Dale Lomas, a well-known figure at and around the ‘Ring, and operator of Bridge to Gantry, was trackside during a session that Porsche had booked out for lap timing, and he says that EXIF data on two photographs taken of the GT2 on the same part of the track, shortly after the start/finish line, suggests a lap time of under seven minutes.
His suggestion of a 6m54s lap ‘or less’ could beat the Lamborghini Huracan Performante’s much-disputed 6m52s effort. It has to be said that Porsche is taking it every bit as seriously as we know the Germans can. That was only the first effort of a whole evening session, and Lomas reports that the entire Touristenfahrten car park was filled with Porsche Sport tents and personnel.
Apparently this was a near-motorsport spec deal, even boasting proper tyre warmers for the Michelin Pilot Cup 2s that the bright yellow test mule was using. But we won’t know whether the record truly has been broken, and if so by how much, until Porsche decides to issue a release. You kind of feel for them – it almost feels like the Internet has stolen the company’s thunder a bit, but we’d expect there to be plenty of video footage to prepare before Porsche actually lets the news slip.
