Prodrive's 592bhp Subaru WRX STI Just Broke The IOM TT Lap Record Again

It did seem like the bonkers Subaru WRX STI Prodrive sent around the Isle of Man TT course at the weekend had more to give, and sure enough, it’s just set an even faster time. The weekend run yielded a 17min 49.75sec lap and a 126.971mph average, but today driver Mark Higgins slashed nearly 15 seconds off that time to give a 17:35.139 at a 128.730mph average.

So, can it go any faster? At the moment, we’re not sure. Michael Fernie, our man in the field, reports that while the car will be running again on Friday and potentially on Wednesday (if there’s a pause in the bike racing for any reason), it’s currently experiencing engine issues due to extreme temperatures building up under the bonnet.

Well done Mark Higgins, unbelievable drive! #isleofman #tt #prodrive #subaru #record #carthrottle

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Prodrive’s efforts later in the week to see if that record falls again.

I saw the Gran Turismo logo on top.

That’s how you know they’re not messing around.

i love the fact that race cars are becoming now just as fast as group B machines but way safer :D
The more time that passes the more mad cars we see popping , i mean come on , you can buy a factory twincharged car from Volvo and not in a limited number, How cool is that ? I’m happy to be 19 , i still have decades of humongous innovation to see , giant ones :3

I just wish the Evo was still around. With the competition from Mitsubishi, it kept pushing Subaru to get more out of the STi. I feel as if they slacked on the new generation. Maybe the Focus RS can create some competition

They were already faster than Group B for years now ;)

Are Volvo engines that powerful then? Last time we wanted to buy a volvo (Diesel) there was nothing interesting and no interesting petrol engines too.

Don’t get the downvotes. The Evos have dominated the Time Attack competition for almost a decade now?

I’d quite like to see a mental time attack series sprout from the Snaefell mountain road, to rival that of the TT, and ultimately pick up where group B left off in a way. But much more safe, of course, and without spectators with a death wish

we already have a hillclimb from the ramsey side up. had various pikes peak cars and formula 2 cars do it in the past

Oh and by comparison what’s the the lap time target of a TT bike? I’d like to see a comparison

The bike record is around 16mins 58 seconds :)

17min 03sec according to the IOM TT site, held by John McGuiness in the absolute class (averaging 132mph). 17min 35sec puts the Subaru on a par with the 600cc ‘Superbike TT’ class record.
